malaise your head
For some reason I haven't lately felt moved to update this internet diary thing. Malaise must be the explanation. Yes, malaise.

Which is not to say there hasn't been stuff happening, stuff like:

*Kia's brother's and his wife's baby being born. They call him "Jack". Kia decided his nickname will be "Kar-Jack", his last name being Karlen and all. I voted for "Pepper Jack".

*My cd is almost done. You know, with the cat on the cover. They're copying it and doing the graphics as we speak, hopefully to be completed in time for the April 15 Active Duo performance.

*I've been trying to figure out what the hell to play for the solo part of the April 15 Active Duo performance. Although I have a few ideas. Kia and Melissa from YV are joining us for a couple things, one of which will be "The Tide Is High".

*I bought a cd of Blondie's greatest hits, primarily so we'll have a choice between the Blondie version of "Tide Is High" and the Jazz Passengers version. I love all of it, but especially "Rapture". There's something admirable about the way they take a really bad idea (Debbie Harry rapping) and take it as far as it can go (now he only eats GUITARS!). (Taking a bad idea as far as it can go is perfectly acceptable in music, because nobody's life is at stake. Unlike in the areas of, say, law, politics and diplomacy. For examples of these, see any newspaper printed in the last five years.)

*Last night in orchestra I played a ridiculous timpani clam...and I WASN'T WEARING THE GIANT CLAM SHIRT! That kind of freaks me out. It was really dumb though: what I did was I had the timpani tuned to G and C, because that's how they're tuned for the entire concert. EXCEPT for the first piece, a short Mozart symphonie in G, for which the C drum should have been tuned to D. The symphonie started, me having forgotten all about changing the C to a D, and I only realized my error when I hit the drum that should have been a D for the first time, three measures into the piece on a big tutti orchestra chord. Mortified, I quickly cranked the C to a D, but the damage had been done. Not THAT much damage, really, it's not like I ruined the whole piece or anything, but that kind of brain slip can haunt you for a couple of days, such that you go on and on and on about it on your boring internet diary, much to the frustration of the few people reading it who after all just want to see pictures of the cats all dressed up.

*We only have four days left of cable movie channels. FOUR DAYS! Four days to live a lifetime of sitting in front of the tv, slack-jawed and inert, with perhaps a few crumbs and a small nacho-cheese stain on our shirtfront. Actually, a movie came on cable the other day that I really liked, and not because it sucked: "Before Sunset". It's a very talky movie, but all the talkiness is well-written and there's a really effective mix of melancholia, bitterness, optimism, regret, taking joy in the small things and a hundred other emotional sensations infusing the conversation. And it takes place in real time, a device I tend to enjoy in movies, especially when it doesn't come across as gimmickey. Plus, Julie Delpy's in practically every shot, and she's pretty easy on the eyes, let's face it.

*I just realized it's almost one and I haven't yet had any coffee. I am SO going to go make some coffee.

NEXT: eventually
