the sizzizzler
In orchestra this week they made us (percussionists) move up to the front of the orchestra. It was a little weird at first. Normally we're way up against the back wall, but they had us in the third row of the violins, in front of the flutes/oboes even. The idea being more rapport between us and the piano soloist in the Bartok concerto. In rehearsal it seemed to go well, until the pianist stopped and looked at me and went, "Motherfucker, why don't you put some sizzizzle in that cyzzmble, bitch?" and then I said, "Bitch? You better go back to your piano and mind your keys and q's before I go all Hungarian on your ass, talking about sizzizzling and shit."
It went on like this for about a half hour, until someone in the oboe section whipped out a big blunt and everyone cooled out. All three concerts went pretty well, despite various scary parts when it seemed like everything could crash and burn. The second movement is really spare and mostly kind of quiet but there's a really powerful tension that never goes away and the percussion's really exposed and I thought I would surely go MAD!

Did I in fact go mad? Maybe. But I'm pretty sure I played with Yid Vicious Saturday. That was a good time, it seemed like everyone played well, we played before the Reptile Palace Orchestra and got to hear them, and that one mean cranky bald guy wasn't working at the Harmony that night. Yay! Fun times, no bad vibes, dancing and merriment, Missy and Matt came, and so did Timpani John. I played drums and theremin and came away thinking I should connive to do more theremin gigs. You get to stand really still and stare freakishly into space, and what better way to spend an evening?

So, um, does anyone want to hire a theremin player? One who's not a mysteriously beautiful Russian woman, I mean. Because, you know, I have a theremin. I've been, you know, looking for theremin work, so...well, whatever, let me know if you need a theremin guy. I'm not Russian, but I could do a pretty good accent. I know how to say "da". So, yeah, let me know. I have comments now.
All right, yeah. So.

See you later.
